The World Trade Center Oculus in Manhattan, New York CityA monument to life and a transportation hub: the Oculus, a new NYC landmark.
In 2016 a giant white bird with wide steel wings and tall curved ribs landed in the middle of Manhattan. A new transportation hub, built to replace the one destroyed at 9/11 attack, could not help commemorating the victims of this cruel act. The image of an airy pigeon was the best choice.
Inside the vaulted, cathedral-like skeleton there are a commuter rail station, retail shops and connections to several subway lines. The station serves for PATH trains to and from New Jersey. Apart from this, it is a cozy recreation zone.
Funny fact: the complex was constructed just over the existing subway line which never ceased to operate.
